ESLD/ Unit 1 review

The first unit was one of the most attractive parts of the course because it almost taught me everything about Canada. First of all, i became acquainted with the geography and regions of Canada which is the most interesting part for me. Canada may be divided into seven physiographic regions: arctic lands, cordillera, interior plains, hudson bay lowland, canadian shield forest land, st lawrence lowlands and appalachia. Divisions are based on each area’s relatively similar physical geography and landforms. Second, i learned about four reading comprehension strategies that will help us understand what we’re reading and develop our reading skills.

In today’s world it is more important than ever to understand how to draw meaning from what you read. Students are actually required to read more than they ever have in the past . And i also learned about the 6 elements of a short story. In analyzing a short story, there are six elements that the reader should look for in the story. All stories began with a seed of an idea. From that point, the author then should plan his story around these elements: setting, conflict, character, plot, theme, point of view. Each of these aspects should be expected in the story. And third i learned about literary devices and how to further derive meaning from what we are reading. When an author sits to write a story, he/she doesn’t simply write what happened. Instead, she uses what are called literary devices which are narrative techniques that add texture, energy, and excitement to the narrative, grip the reader’s imagination, and convey information. Literary devices are techniques that writers use to create special and pointed effect in their writing, to convey information, or to help readers their writing on a deeper level.
